I got a call from a number I don’t recognize, and the person didn’t leave a message. Out of curiosity, is there any way to trace a mobile number’s current location online, or do those “live location” tools you see advertised not really work?

For example, your carrier might know you’re near three towers and estimate you’re in a certain neighborhood, but no random website has direct access to that. Only apps you grant location permission to—or official requests to the carrier—can see accurate, up‐to‐date positions.
